Greetings,
I would be very grateful for any suggestions on who the gentlemen in this photo might be.
A family member thinks they could be Barracloughs from Yorkshire?

Does this look like a family group or perhaps members of the same company or society?

I believe the writing partially obscured on edge reveals the photographer was John Cruikshank Taylor & Sons of Newgate Street, London and Google suggests they were active 1890-1910?.

Any comments welcome.

TIA

I would say this is a family group, the two young men putting their hands on the shoulders of others is a very familiar gesture,  usually only used around the time this photo would have been taken,  between family members.

Yes, as Pat said, touching implies a close family relationship. I would guess at late 1890s-early 1900s

Thanks Pat and Carol.

So could be three brothers (born about 1840-50?) seated with two sons (cousins born about 1870-80?)  standing, each with a hand on Dad's shoulder?

Four of the gents are wearing formal cravate collars, which are sort of timeless, but the taller one standing has a day-to-day collar with a tie. The style, the very high 2 1/2" collar came in around 1900 and was replaced by the more comfortable shorter collar just before the war, 1912 or so.

My apologies for this, in advance  :-[

Photographer is John Cruikshank Taylor & Sons of Newgate, London.

Subjects, possibly, Barraclough family from Yorkshire.

So, either John Cruickshank had a subsidiary in Yorkshire, or the Barraclough family went to London?  :-\

Are either of those scenarios viable?

No apologies needed, BumbleB  :)

I had worried about that myself. It seems strange that so many family members traveled all the way to London at the same time - certainly wouldn't have been just to get their photo taken  :-\

I also wondered about the 'men only' scenario. Surely family groups would usually have included their women? So perhaps there was a special reason for this male group photo.  ???

Or perhaps they are all from London and unrelated to the Barraclough family after all  ???
