Death Certificate for seamen killed in action
« on: Wednesday 06 March 19 16:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

A friend needs to obtain a death certificate for his grandfather who was killed in 1942 following a u boat attack on a British merchant ship.
What would be his best course of action to obtain this?

His record will be held by the General Register Office and can be applied for in the same way as for deaths on land.  The index is in Findmypast which will give the reference for the application.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

No it'll be a Volume and Page.  If you post his name we can cross check.

The register is called the Register of Deceased Seamen.  His death on the SS LaLande 14 November 1942 is in the March 1943 register but I note that the Registrar General to whom the death was reported was in Ireland not the GRO in England/Wales which is why I was expecting a reference to a GRO register.

I suggest an first contact should be with the Irish GRO to get advice:
https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/GRO_Contact_Us.aspx  The system is probably straight forward but I haven't applied to them before so worth going direct to them.

Cross checking it is the right chap here is the crew list:

Thanks Max.

He was born in Dublin while his father was working there for a short time.
