Finding a grave in London
« on: Wednesday 06 March 19 17:14 GMT (UK) »
I had a great grandfather, George William Pitt, who died in Southwark (in the sub district of North Southwark) in February 1940. Southwark council told me that ALL their grave records are online, but there's no sign of him. His wife Amy Caroline Pitt died in 1924 and there's no sign of her either. Does anybody have any idea how I might proceed? Thank you.

Have you tried to find any mention of their deaths in the local newspapers and in particular funeral details?

Were they Catholic, Quaker, Methodist etc?

I would suggest that you get in touch with Southwark and make it clear that there are no burial records for the two of them.

Did they come from somewhere other than Southwark?  Could they have been buried somewhere else?

Hi, thanks for the responce. George was born and raised in the Southwark area. I tried Southwark council but all they could suggest was that maybe they were buried somewhere else - which wasn't particularly helpful. I'm stumped!

What does George's death certificate say?

I've attached his death certificate. Southwark council got back in touch to say they had no idea.

So died at his home address then.  Did he marry again after Amy died?  On the face of it he appears to have married a Frances U Ward in 1935  in the Mansfield district.  Is that correct?

February 1940, I'm trying to think whether London was bombed around that time.  No it wasn't, that started in September 1940.

If I have that 1935 marriage correct, could he have been carted off to the Mansfield district to be buried?

The other option I suggested was newspapers for any mention of his death or funeral.

Did Southwark council specifically say that they didn't have any burial records for 1924 or 1940 or just that George and Amy were not in the records?

He remarried in 1928 with Frances Charlotte West and they spend the rest of their lives living at 265 Weston St, Old Kent Road (which is also where he died).

Southwark said that they had the records, but he (nor Amy Caroline from 1924) were in them. He suggested that some people were sometimes shipped off to Brookwood Cemetery but I think that was earlier in the century.

Brookwood Cemetery registers are indexed on FamilySearch. Well, most of them are! Including those for the relevant period. According to FS, the Pitts are not buried there.

Nor in Wandsworth
