South Australia: William Herbert BUTLER, born 1841, Lenton, Nottingham
« on: Wednesday 06 March 19 21:43 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

The SA Police Gazette 1895 has an entry for a William Herbert BUTLER which, unfortunately, I am unable to review.   However, I wonder if this may refer to the William Henry BUTLER, born 1841 in Lenton, Nottinghamshire, the son of Michael BUTLER (born 1803) and Elizabeth BUTLER nee GOODALL (born 1806).

He may have migrated to Australia, although I have no evidence, but it may answer the question why he seems to vanish from English records after December 1857 (he had been in prison for four years to that date).

Thank you,

BAC3

Newspaper article doesnt give anything up like his age etc. You may already have seen it.

Hi,

The SA Police Gazette, September 4th 1895 only mentions him by name as apprehended for larceny in Port Adelaide, 14 days and Adelaide, 2 months.

The SA Police Gazette, 23rd October 1895 under descriptions of prisoners to be discharged fro HM Goals during the week ending 2nd November 1895.
There is a description of William Herbert BUTLER which includes , cutler, America, aged 55 years etc.  for larceny Port Adelaide, fourteen days and Adelaide two months.

Good Morning Everyone,

Thank you for your posts for which I am very grateful.

The mention of "America" disqualifies him sadly from connection with Nottingham, unless he migrated to Australia via the United States.   Of course the major inconvenience in search terms is that the "Herbert" tends to get dropped and there are a myriad named William BUTLER!!
