Problems with Ancestry
« on: Thursday 07 March 19 15:09 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone else having problems with Ancestry? The 1911 census is greyed out when I look  ::)

Carol, I just tried and mine is OK. I can find my great uncle in 1911 in Co Durham.

No problems with the 1911 but it keeps "flipping" over to Ancestry.com on some searches.

My sub is with Ancestry.co.uk but quite often whilst looking for a BMD etc it will show basic matches with more relevant info blanked out and when I look at the URL  it's showing Ancestry .com

Not an isolated incident - happens at least 2-3 times a day

I've been having the same problem with flipping from co.uk (where I have my account) to .com, then being unable to access the info & being inundated with U.S records.

And so do I.  Sometimes when I hit the "Home" button I go to .com.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Their search algorithm also seems to be all over the place. When I’m searching for a marriage in, say, 1880 with a groom and an “exact” spouse surname, I don’t expect/want a list of 18th century land tax assessments!

I seems as long as you keep paying, Ancestry are not bothered. I'm tired of trying to do searches for 16th & 17th century ancestors & being offered details of someone with a similar name in the 1939 register, or worse still, in the 19th or 20th century in America, then being told I can't view it because I don't pay enough (not that I wanted to anyway).
