Griffin family of Birkenhead
« on: Thursday 07 March 19 17:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm looking for help tracing my great great grandmother Annie Griffin.  From the 1881 census I know that she was born in Birkenhead around 1855.  I cannot find her on the 1861 or 1871 census though.  Any one any ideas or maybe someone can spot something I've missed.
Thank you.

Hi,

I can see her on 1871 census at 7 Charles Street Birkenhead age 17 as a visitor in the house of Noah and Josephine Roberts, Noah age 31, Josephine 29. Also there is Noah's mother in law Mary Williams age 55. Ancestry has her surname showing as Griffice but it is Griffin on the census sheet.

Who is she with in 1881?

Do you know who her father or mother were?

Going along the Noah and Josephine route found by Alan we have in 1861

William Williams 43
Mary Williams 43
Josephine Williams 20
Anne Griffin 1 nurse child born Birkenhead

Bit of a leap from 1 to 17 in 10 years though.

Hi,

It looks like Annie was living in Liverpool when she was married there in 1878 to John Sanderson. 1881 census has her back living in Birkenhead age 28 with husband and family. Marriage certificate has her father as Thomas Griffin (deceased).Presumably 1861 census should have shown her age as 7 not 1 (transcription error?)

There is a birth of an Anna Griffin in Wirral Mar Qtr 1854 8a/402 on Free BMD - could this be her?

Yes should be 7 but it does look like 1 and the nurse child bit threw me as I thought it literally meant nursing a child and you would do that with a younger child.
But maybe it was just how she was described in lieu of any other relationship.

Thank you all so much for your help.  It is very much appreciated.
Apparently a nurse child was like a foster child.
