Finding a recent death record
« on: Thursday 07 March 19 19:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I've recently found out that my Grandfather died in 2015 (I never met him). I know his full name and year of birth. Is there a way to find record of his death? He is listed on his parents gravestone in Abbey, Co Galway so I've been told, but I don't know if he is actually buried there.
Thanks

Hi Sinann

Thanks for your reply. I've searched on there but can't find anyone that fits. I'm in England, so it's difficult to find out much info. Do you think it would be worth contacting the church attached to the graveyard (if there is one)? Also, is it usual in Ireland for a deceased person to be named on the family headstone if they aren't buried there?
Thanks

You could try the search here
https://galwaybayfm.ie/category/death-notices/

It can happen a person not buried there is named on a headstone but in my experience only if they are buried abroad.
The local parish would likely have a parish leaflet which would also be on their website if they have one, if it's possible to look through back copies his anniversary might be on it, assuming there is some one to get a mass said for his anniversary.

Thanks very much for your help Sinann, this is all new to me, you do things differently in Ireland! It's very interesting.

It's usually fairly easy to find a recent death in Ireland, just play around with the terms you use.
Yes we do things differently particularly regarding death.

Not unusual too....

e.g
http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/cavan/photos/tombstones/redhills-rc/target1.html  buried many places!

What a handy stone for anyone reearching them!!
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.
