Good Evening all,
I have been trying to locate the final resting place of my Great Great Grandfather. William Arthur Catterall
Died 1917 age 43 Birkenhead, wirral.
This really would be the final piece to his jig saw. After almost 5 years of on off searching.
William took his own life on march 17th 1917, the family would not have the money to pay for a private funeral,
After speaking to landican today 3 public cemetries were in use then. Rake lane, flaybrick and bebington.

Does anyone have any information on the most common cemetery used for public burials in 1917,

We have so much information about his life, but we are stuck at the end of it.

I would like start my search with any information on the best root to go down. Thank you.

I do not know when the practice ended but I believe that someone who had taken their own life would not be buried in consecrated ground,especially
Roman Catholics.
I am not 100% certain but it  bears looking into.
I apologise if this leads you to following a false trail.

I had thought the same, but it was legalised in late 1800's with conditions.

What was William’s home address? That might narrow down the search.

If it is the William married to Jessie, then in 1911 he was living at 20 Earl St Rock Ferry Birkenhead.

Have you got his death certificate to see what addresses are on there?

His family were living in Lilly Street Rock ferry, his wife was Edith Catterall,

Showing on 1911 cenus, he was an engine fitter,
He took his own life in the river mersey by were the rock ferry pier was,

I think Flay brick is were my search will begin, although i have his Wife, GGG grandmother, Ediths sister and Young child in Bebington.

Further thoughts much appriecated.

Johnw65, wow .....i cannot thank you enough for the links, i have been through them all today,

William is a tough one to find, as we have struggled yet again. But a 1000+ thank you's.....

I think my search now takes me to Chester or Wigan, as he had a younger sister that has a site in wigan and under a private burial, as i have searched both his mother and father were alive when he passed, and am hoping we might have some success there.

He was also part of the wirral union. So i may believe if not in a family plot ...is in a public grave.... some where!
