Vera Stuart-Jervis previously Vera Murdoch Coysh aka Jane England
« on: Friday 08 March 19 12:57 GMT (UK) »
Vera had a long and successful career (from the 1920s to the 1960s) as a romantic novelist. She was married twice, firstly to Trevor Southgate and secondly to Douglas Stuart-Jervis, with whom she had two sons. Vera was born in 1896 in Yorkshire. I have got all the BMD and census information, as well as information about her books. My focus of interest is her first husband but obviously she was an interesting person in her own right.
I would very much like to locate a photograph of her. It's hard to believe that a novelist never had a publicity picture taken! I should also be happy to hear from any members of the Stuart-Jervis family with any information about her -- please feel free to PM if you would prefer to.
Someone out there must know something! I've been chasing Vera's ghost for about three years now!

Who published her books?  If you know that you could ask the publishers if they have any photos of her.

Her publisher was Hurst and Blackett, long since subsumed into other publishers who in turn have been absorbed by Random House. I did try contacting them but they had no record of the publisher, let alone knowledge of their archives!

The only other possibility is to see if you can buy any of her books that have a photo on them.  Abebooks seem to have some books under the Jane England name.

You could try asking the seller if there is a photo on the book.

Thank you, I'll bear that in mind. I looked at all her books in the British Library and was hoping for a photo, but without success. I think the problem is that photographs would probably have appeared on the inside back flap of a paper cover, which obviously tend not to survive.

Thank you for that. I hadn't seen that one. I have found other reviews and even a short interview with her -- again no photograph! I note this is published by Cassell but a quick Wiki shows that of course that too has been merged and re-merged with other publishers ...
