Information on Death Certificates
« on: Friday 08 March 19 14:56 GMT (UK) »
Dear All,

For some time I have been trying to find the death of a close relative. My Grans brother John Connolly was born in Manchester December 19th 1908. I have tried to find his death but there are at least three possibilities (1968, 1971 and 1990). I am not sure what information is given on a death certificate but if I obtained one at a time could I confirm or eliminate it by DoB or spouse etc?

Regards,
Paul
I lived in Ardwick, Manchester in the early 1960s as a small child and much travelling of the world has now led me to want to know more about my roots. Carter, Beckwith, Connolly, Heron and Kelly are all names that form part of my family tree.

The precise date of birth (so far as the informant knew it) should be recorded on the 1971 and 1990 death certificates, but in 1968 it was just age rather than DOB. (The format changed in 1969).

Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)

Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)

Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

You have spelt the surname Connolly, but I think in 1939 (per free index) he's John Connelly, in Manchester - is that right?

I see from FreeBMD that the death registration of John Connolly, Dec qtr 1971 Manchester 10e 10, is indexed with birthdate "about 1908", suggesting the informant didn't know the specific date.

Many thanks.
The surname spelling has been open to interpretation but the documents supplied by my Gran was Connolly but I have seen others Conolly, Connelly etc etc.

It looks as though I will have to buy one or two certificates to be able move on.

If you go to GRO site you can buy a PDF copy - which is suitable for family research - for £7 quite a bit cheaper than a full certificate from GRO

the date of birth on the 1990 one is 29th March 1908 so you could discount that one

Thanks for the information and now a 50/50 chance of the first cert being the right one.
