Higginbottom White Rooney Gosport Portsmouth Adoptions 1850-1920s
« on: Saturday 09 March 19 08:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi - I am at a complete dead-end with finding the reality of any of these three! And I am not finding any DNA matches in Ancestry or My Heritage.

Cecelia or Cecilia Higginbottom b1883 Gosport. Family gossip is that she is Irish, adopted by a Minister from Portsea. But have also some thoughts that her mother was:
Annie Rooney - Can not find any record of her!

Father: Joseph Higginbottom b Brompton 1868. d. 1946 -think he is Royal Marine in July1886, later marries Louisa Spearing b1863-1929.  Think he is son of Alfred and Alice Jane Hazlewood of London.

Any help would be much appreciated - totally confused! Ceceilia does marry John White and come to Australia - so she existed. Thanks Sue
Australia/Ir: Kelly, Flynn, McNamara, Dunshea
Oz/UK:White, Higginbottom, Oz/DK: Miller (Moller-Danish),
USA: Olson (Danish), Larson (Swedish), Ongstad (Norwegian), Stockert/Bast (German via Ukraine)

the Joseph married to Louisa looks to be too young to be the father of Cecilia. Baptism 31 May 1868, date of birth 9 Feb 1868, son of Alfred, harness maker, & Alice Jane at St Simons Chelsea. Playing around with dob search on 1939 register, Joseph still in Portsmouth area.

Sorry, I'd made an error with father's name for Joseph will now correct.

Have found her birth entry I believe:

Mary Ann Cecilia Higginbottom - registered Dec.qtr.1883 Alverstoke, mmn Rooney

Plus a brother:

Joseph Higginbottom - registered Sept.1881 Alverstoke, mmn Rooney

In 1891 young Joseph, 10, born Gosport, is a pauper in Portsea Island Union Workhouse.   Can't find his sister under any of her names.

So, would appear that 'Cecilia', like her brother, was indeed born Gosport and their mmn was Rooney.

In 1881 at Alverstoke there is an Ann Higginbottom 36 - wife of Private Royal Marines, born Ireland with a son Stephen Higginbottom born 1871 Ireland - this must surely be the mother of Joseph junior and Mary Ann 'Cecilia'?

As to Joseph Higginbottom senior - surely can't be the one you mention who'd only have been 13 when son Joseph born?

Think you need the birth certificate of Mary Ann Cecilia Higginbottom born 1883 Alverstoke to confirm her father was indeed named Joseph.
