Hello,

My GGF William Thomas Charles HEWITT was killed on 7 June 1917 in the Battle of Messines Ridge.

He served with the Middlesex Regiment 23rd Battalion G/22809.

Where would I find the war diaries foe the above please?

Did you pick up the fact that he was initially buried where he fell and re-buried after the Armistice in the cemetery in which he now lies?

The place where his remains were found is on the map, zoom out a bit and look in the square at the top with Oosthoek and Triangular Wood in it.  Below Triangular Wood is marked Ruined Farm. Wiggle the mouse a bit and on the present day image you should be looking at a bend in the tracks in front of some farm buildings.  That is the spot give or take a few metres.  (Forgive me, I don't know whether you can use map references so I haven't used them myself just in case).

Thank you for taking the time to look into this for me, much appreciated.

I did not know my great grandfather was buried and re-buried, so thank you for telling me this.  To see the place his remains were found on the maps was fascinating and your explanation on how to navigate was really helpful.  I had no idea about the comparison maps and no, I cannot use map references, so thanks for not using them!
