This is the nub of it. We think we know the person wearing the medals and are looking to access their service record (this is the subject of a separate thread which Max kindly answered). If the medals in the photo are also in the record, we presume we have a match.

I've attached another crop of the medals although not sure if it helps any more.

If we had a possible name for the subject we could look for service records and the Medal Rolls. As MaxD said, the Medal Rolls are available.

We now have the likely suspect's service record and I've attached the only reference to medals. He served from 11 April 1855 to 20 April 1864 and was granted one years additional service (from 25th February 1858) for the defence of the Alumbagh Bagh Post having been left there by Sir Henry Havelock on 25th September 1857.

The "medal for India" may well be the Indian Mutiny Medal which had four clasps.  The connection with Havelock could make one of the clasps the Defence of Lucknow, the other, don't want to guess.  The "Persia" medal sounds like the India General Service Medal with clasp "Persia"in 1856.
You might like to check with his secret name on the Ancestry campaign medals:

Jebber ID'd both medals early on.

Hello Max, thanks for the reply. Yes, I appreciate Jebber's previous ID but thought people might be interested to see the record as well.

Separate medal records for the 'secret name' * on FindMyPast and Ancestry are India-related. The former says Indian Mutiny Medal in defence of Lucknow. The latter gives more detail: no, not engaged in capture of Delhi; yes, engaged in the defence of Lucknow; yes, involved in operations after Lucknow from 25th(?) March 1858(?).

Could 'in possession of two good conduct badges' refer to the third medal in the photo - or perhaps the badges on the lapel?

* I'm doing this for a friend who's forum-shy but grateful to you all, all the same.

The way you describe the clasps suggest the second was "Central India".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Mutiny_Medal

Good conduct badges were stripes worn on the sleeve so don't relate to the 3rd medal.  Lapel badge unlikely to be military. The Turkish Crimea medal has been mentioned but he would have a British Crimea medal with that.  The snippet you posted has no reference to the Crimea.  Are we allowed at least to know what regiment he served with, that at least would give an idea of where else he served (unless it is on the record still hidden from view).

He was in the 78th Regiment of Highlanders, recorded elsewhere as 78th Foot Highland Ross-shire Buffs, no. 3 company.

The 78th didn't serve in the Crimea and their service after India does not seem to have been in medal earning places.  The 3rd medal could well be non-military.  This may amuse you:

That is absolutely priceless  ;D ;D ;D  Do you suppose he goes down the pub like that? And you can see why the new-fangled revolver caught on.

I think it also proves our chap couldn't be involved in various Edinburgh marriages in 1858, seeing as they didn't come back until 1859. He was in Edinburgh Castle in 1861 and then left completely in 1864.

Here's something more straight-laced from the NAM.
