US social security and railroad pension
« on: Sunday 10 March 19 06:41 GMT (UK) »
I wasn’t really sure where it post this question so thought I would try here.  I’ve been helping two brothers who’s dad was adopted.  Long story but through DNA we connected as we share a common ancestor.  Their grandmother and my GG grandmother were sisters. Their grandmother was Edith Selina May Wade and her husband was Hubert Thomas Walker.

The walker brothers are now in their 70’s and trying to piece their tree together.  Which I’m helping them do. Their dad was Eugene Percival Mansell Walker.  Turns out via DNA and research that Hubert is not likely their grandfather as Edith’s marriage had ended by 1911 as she’s listed as single and living with a Percy Taylor which we now believe is an alias as he too is married and was born Eugene Percy Mansell the son of Eugene Staunton and Eleanor Jane Mansell née Bastick. Eugene Staunton it seems was illegitimate son of Mary Jane Mansell.  Somewhere between 1871 and 1881 he changes his surname to Taylor.  But that’s whole other mystery.

I think Eugene Percy Mansell aka Percy Taylor (born 1880) May have gone to the US as I found a social security application and a railroad pension but they are just transcripts.  I’m wondering where else to look for him to see if he had another family or where he might be buried in the US.  Any help would be great as I don’t know where else to look for him.  I’ve built a tree for the brothers on ancestry and added to my own tree too.

This is what I found

I did see that one and wondered if perhaps he could of moved from US to Canada.  I also wondered if Eugene lied about his birthdate as his wife back in England may well have still been alive.

I shall dig a bit more into the above family as they are listed in the cemetery. I can’t recall exactly now why I thought maybe it wasn’t him will look again.

Thank you
Deb

Deb, are you taking his birthdate as Feb 12 based on the USA Railroad pension?
His GRO birth registration was 1st quarter 1880, and the American date format is month/day/year.  Chances are his birthdate is 02 Dec 1879.

With regards to the grave Chempat posted: I did see a 1912 ship manifest for a Percy Mansell heading to a friend in Canada, and dismissed it. Maybe I shouldn't have! I will go back and see if I can find it again.

Just something to toss on the back burner, as I think it is way out of date range for your fellow, but in Camberwell, in 1851, there is a Eugene P. Mansell marrying a Rosina Taylor.

Oh I hadn’t thought of that with US dates I too may have seen a ships list if you find it again let me know as it may be a different one to what I saw.

I’ve filled in quite a bit of the Mansell family so will check that Percy could be related.

They’ve given me quite the headache I did wonder if Eugene Staunton Mansell found out who his father was and hence the name change ... just to complicate matters, Mary Jane (or Mary A as some census has her) has a brother Thomas who also names his son Eugene Staunton Mansell but he’s born later.

The twists in this family are better than days of our lives.  Edith the mother of the boys dad then went on to have another child William Tolhurst (we only just worked this one out) the brothers were suspicious of him as he married their dads first wife so I encouraged them to order his birth certificate  and mother was Edith..... oh boy.  Their dad moved to Scotland so suspect a rift between half brothers and a lot of lost information. I don’t know who raised the brothers dad I didn’t want to pry too much.

He shows on 3, all for the same trip, (England to Boston to head to Ontario) but only one has any info.  I'm just in the process of snipping it off the list, as the writing is....not bad, but hard to make out the name of his friend (who was in England, not Ontario, but Percy is headed to Ontario).
He indicated married, but then "no" was written over it, and I'm not sure if the friend in Balham is Tayner or Fayner, on Raverhill? Rd. Balham.

Thank you!  How does he get a US social security and rail road pension if he’s in Canada?  I’m sure it’s him on the US social security as he names his parents.

Or did he live and work there and have a family Canada.

He’s a tricky character.

If it is him, maybe he was just up visiting and....died.  ???

There are a LOT of Percy Mansell's, and even a lot of Eugene P. Mansells, so you have a tricky path to follow, for sure.

For sure ... only one I’m fairly certain about is the social security one as it gives his parents which are correct except they have Vastick instead of Bastick ... I thought maybe I could find a US census.

Of course because he also has an alias makes it even trickier but I don’t think he used that he left the UK.
