I think we need to see the source of the name, is it from the census or a Parish Register. In queries of this nature, in my experience, it is useful to see the original source of the name.

Hi Stan,

The declaration of her birth place is from both parish records and Census returns.

In the 1881 Census there is an Ann Keirs [Ann Anderson] who was born in Preston Mill RG11; Piece: 5115; Folio: 15; Page: 7

My grandfather was born in Preston, Northumberland in 1869. The family were all miners so there must have been a pit there.
Sinclair: Lanarkshire & Antrim; McDougall: Bute; Ramsay: Invernesshire; Thomson & Robertson: Perthshire; Brown: Argyll; Scott: Ayrshire: Duff: Fife.

There is more than one Preston in Northumberland. The one you refer to is more than likely the one which near Tynemouth. https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NBL/Tynemouth

Thanks JenB. I have dug out the birth certificate and it is indeed the registration district of Tynemouth, sub-district North Shields. I do remember being told that my grandfather was born near Morpeth, which seems a wee bit away but I suppose the certificate must be correct.

Tracing that one back the birthplace changes to Carham in earlier censuses  :-\

The person Stan refers to is with her mother Phyllis, and earlier censuses show her father to be John.

Ann Anderson, daughter of Phillis and John, baptised Carham, abode Presson Hill, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-64V3-JHS?i=182&cc=1309819&cat=1804230

Allan, is this the same person?
