Sponsors are the Godparents.

The Kennedy connection, if correct, would be through the marriage of Margaret’s sister.

Thanks for that heywood. It's a lot to learn, the rest of my family have no religion whatsoever and mostly married in Register Offices, which has proved expensive with certificates etc. The James Costello, sponsor at Tom Joe's baptism could well be the James Costello in the 1901 census couldn't it? Unsure about the Mary Costello though. None of my tree matches have a mother or father for Margaret Costello either, which is strange.

Thanks

Staying with the 1901 census at house 6 in Leitrim - More (Leitrim, Galway) LINK

by 1911 there is living at house 9 in Leitrim More (Leitrim, Galway) a James COSTELLOE most likely the son with his family; and possibly Margaret BURKE's brother
He married a Mary DONOHOE on Nov 16 1904

James COSTELLOE of Leitrim died Oct 10 1905 aged 69; LINK
Mary COSTELLOE of Leitrim-more died Oct 26 1907 a widow aged 65 LINK
Informant on both their son James

This couple had children as James COSTELLOE & Mary DWYER
Mary Anne b Sep 07 1864 cannot see other records immediately
John Joseph b Sep 01 1869 I think married Mary KANE on Dec 08 1897
Catherine Josephine b Apr 20 1972 bap Apr 20 1872 cannot see other records immediately
Bridget b Apr 28 1875 bap Feb 03 1875 possibly Delia who married Denis Kennedy
Margaret Maria b May 09 1877 bap Apr 08 1877 as shown on 1901 census as 23?
James b Nov 20 1879 bap Jul 19 1879as shown on 1901 census as 21?

Dates of birth are from Civil Registers and Baptism from Church Records LINK
Unfortunately the church records for marriage do not go up to the early 1900s
Also it was not unusual for baptisms to show dates earlier than the date of birth as children were baptised immediately but registered when they could! to save being fined for a late registration a recent date was sometimes given!

If these calculations are correct
Margaret's parents were James COSTELLOE & Mary DWYER b May 09 1877 LINK

Thanks so much for this my luck. It certainly seems logical to me for them to be her parents, taking everything into account.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated

She certainly does look a possibility - looking at naming patterns of the children and parents

Laurence’s parents - Thomas and Bridget
That Margaret’s - James and Mary

Agewise too.   7 on 1901 Census, Single, Galway born, Age 22 (+/-5 yrs) http://www.rootschat.com/links/01nhu/  some of which can probably be accounted for by Marriages.  Dau of James/Mary.... unless there is a Marriage for her on irishgenealogy!!   ;D

So you can confirm correct family?

Myluck,
You have a date for the marriage of John and Mary Kane - can you see the civil record!
I can’t find it and wonder whether it is missing along with Laurence and Margaret Burke’s marriage.
Perhaps records not passed on etc.

You could be correct heywood

I was looking a transcriptions from Leitrim Parish on rootsireland.ie for church marraiges
It could be that these were not civil registered

The joys of research!

Myluck!

Just noticed that you also have Burkes on your signature. I know it is a common name in Ireland, are yours linked to mine at all?
