In search of Douglas.
« on: Monday 11 March 19 06:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone!  :)
This is my first post here after a long time lurking and reading.
I'm Australian and have been researching my paternal side on and off for a while now. It's been a long and at times frustrating journey, family history research was never really done with any significant effort until now. This is the first time I've reached out publicly for advice and help, so if you're able to assist in any way I'll be very grateful.  ;D

What I'm trying to uncover is my direct paternal side as far back as possible in the UK. As you can imagine for someone who lives at the other end of the world, this is not an easy task. After some investigative work and educated guessing I'm able to establish the following:

My Great Grandfather migrated to Australia in 1839 (against his will) and was born on the 20th of March 1821 in Warwickshire (Baptised at Carris Lane, Birmingham on 8 April 1821).
I'm almost 100% certain that his parents were William Douglas and Hannah Bacon, married on 18th of June 1820 at St Martin Church of England in Birmingham. I base this assumption on only finding two Edward Douglas's born between 1820 & 1821 - one of them died in infancy - so I just followed the money from there.

Now, the issue I have now is going back further. I have no idea about my Great-Great Grandparents, William and Hannah Douglas. When were they born, where did they live, where are they buried? Who were their parents? Where did they come from? So many unanswered questions I'm sure all of us are familiar.

It's my intent that one day I'll travel to the UK and follow my ancestors footsteps, visit the sites of significance to them and visit their grave sites (if they still exist). I'm sure you understand.

If you're able to help, I'll be indebted to you - maybe even send you some treats from Australia as a measure of gratitude. :)

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Could this be William's burial - St Paul, Birmingham - 2 January 1848

William Douglas of Pritchett Street, aged 58.

I also noticed that Matthew Douglas was a witness to William and Hannah's marriage in 1820.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Good work too! Thank you.

I did notice the certificate listing Matthew as a witness. At a guess I'm assuming he may be William's brother perhaps?
I'm hoping he may be the key to unlock further into the past. ;)
