Workhouse Record Question
« on: Monday 11 March 19 09:33 GMT (UK) »
Still looking for John Lee, I've found an entry on Ancestry in the Westminster Union admissions and discharges collection for December 1876 that says a John Lee, born 1864, will remain in their care because his mother has died in the workhouse.

I'm relying on online records because I can't get to the LMA. But

* There are no more entries for John with or without mother.  He came from St James' parish to the training school in Tooting.
* I've looked at all the female Lee's from the workhouse records but I'm assuming they aren't complete as its not that extensive.
* I've tried extracting all possible female Lee's from the death records and comparing them with census without much success.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Hi
That record is in the Poor Law School District Registers.
John's mother was Charlotte, I think.

Have you seen Charlotte Lee, admitted to the Westminster Workhouse 1 Nov 1876?

She was admitted with two children, John Thomas Lee born 1864 and Mary Ann Lee born 1873. She was a servant, and unmarried, born 1842

She had Dropsy on admittance, and died 13 Nov 1876

Ancestry hadn't indexed the surname on the children   >:( >:(

Mary A Lee born 1873 also admitted to the Tooting school 18 Jan 1877. Says mother died at Highgate. That's recorded in 1879, she is also listed in 1878, but no further information given.

The problem is - your John Lee says he was born 18 April 1864.
Whereas John (Thomas) Lee is said by his mother in her exam to have been born 23 August 1864.
She does not appear to have married John's father Christopher Deighton, hence their Lee name in the poor law records.
JTL may of course be around in the later census returns, and if so it would eliminate him.
