I revisited old newspapers and have now found reports that Thomas absconded to London where he was recaptured a while later and bought back for trial. Amazing the police communications 200 years ago!

Thanks for your input which made me look again.

I have seen the "Sponsors of Oxford Freemen 1663 - 1997" in the Oxford History Centre, and am intrigued by a Beesley Thomas , son no 2, of Samuel, coal dealer, sponsored 24 Sep 1824.  {Line 19 on the attached}

I wondered if anyone has access to a Kelly's or similar directory for the early 1820's whether there is any reference to this father and son, where they were located etc...

Am also going to post this as a new Post.
