John allcock 1843 & Moses sibford gower
« on: Monday 11 March 19 15:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone , looking for any information on John allcock born about 1843 in sibford  gower Oxfordshire . Can find census  details but no birth or death details. I have even had someone check copies of parish records with no one of that name baptised between 1840-50 . I have his marriage cert naming father Moses  but can’t find any information on him either or even johns mothers name . From marriage cert and census info they moved to midlands around 1860 s  , if anyone can help much appreciated

Nigel

Hi - and welcome to Rootschat!

You say you have census details, but don't know his parents names (apart from father from marriage). So presumably he wasn't with his family in the censuses?
Can you let us have the census details?

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
There is a John Walker  Alcock registered AMJ 1842 Banbury (includes Sibford Gower)
The Gro gives his mmn as Callow
The following is all supposition and would need to be looked at more carefully

Closest I can find for a marriage...from Familysearch  1835 Epwell for a John Alcock and Mary Callow
Perhaps John snr died and Mary remarried a Moses
There is a marriage 27th April 1846 Tunstall, Staffs
Moses Hancock and Mary Ann Alcock parents Joseph Hancock and Samuel Alcock.
Perhaps John died and John jnr only knew Moses as his father.
As I say, perhaps a flight of fancy on my part  :)
When do you fist find him in the censuses?

In 1881 he is in Tipton, still a baker, same family but with older son William too

I see a Geo Callow and family are next door but one - coincidence?

Yes that’s the right one 1891 census as a baker , have seen the callow hint before but could never really match things together

Or - could this be his parents?
1841
Ladywood Birmingham
Moses Allcock 29 boatman N
Sarah 26 N
Eliza 5 Y
Thomas 8 mths Y

Seems unlikely, as they have further children still in Birmingham (mmn Sturland)
