Receiving parish relief 1871
« on: Monday 11 March 19 15:27 GMT (UK) »
My 3xG Grandfather Thomas Clark is shown in the 1871 census (RG10/1269/18/13) for Catmore, Berkshire as "Labourer (receiving parish relief)".  Whilst I think I understand that this is to do with the Poor Law Act, I would be grateful if someone could point me towards a resource where I might find out more about Thomas and his parish relief in Catmore.

Thank you for help that can be given.

I doubt they are online yet, but if overseers accounts and vestry minutes for Catmore survives then they often list the names of people in receipt of parish relief. I have found many Essex parish records have surviving overseers records etc. If they do survive for Catmore, they should be at Berks record office.

Thank you Coombs - I have just sent the Berks Record Office an email enquiring if they have any relevant records.
