Sandra, thank you so much! You are a miracle worker, and the cherry on the cake, for me, was the newspaper clippings with their photos attached. It never ceases to amaze me how a few short sentences in a newspaper can turn a simple name into a living, breathing person. The Bearts seem to have been attracted to strong, capable, independent women judging by what I've found on their wives, so far. Interestingly, one of George's nephews had a mother-in-law who was a professional tennis player, and played the game at around the same time as Edith, though in this instance, in South Africa.

Pleased to help. Saw that she was a golf player in a few other articles.  ;)

RunKitty, thank you for unearthing that census return for me.
Sandra, I'm amazed at how much you've been able to find, and are still finding. I followed up on that "KAYS LTD Per George Beart" clue, and I think it might be a catalogue company that was based in Worcester, England from the late 1880s. It sold "functional workwear" (such as overalls) and household items originally, but moved into mainstream fashion in the 1920s, apparently, so it looks as if George was acting as an overseas agent and taking orders for the company, rather than working in a store, which is what I'd originally assumed.
