Marriage of Owen MAUGHAN & Mary MCDONAGH
« on: Tuesday 12 March 19 17:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am currently searching for the marriage record of Owen Maughan and Mary McDonagh. Both were born in Ireland circa 1837, but this is all the information I have to date. They had a son, Patrick, born around 1855, though I have been unable to locate where he was born also, though it could possibly be in Co Mayo.
Any information greatly appreciated, many thanks!

Is there anything relevant on that thread?

I have found an entry in the 1861 Scotland census in Greenock that could be the family under the surname spelling Mahon. In that entry it states the Patrick Mahon was born around the same time but in Greenock. Parents born in Ireland. I haven’t been able to figure out if this is the same family or just a coincidence.

Jto; " Maughan " could prove a devil to search on.  My mates name is Moran. Here (Leitrim) pronounced 'Morn'. Elsewhere, likely Moor Ann.

Likewise, Mayne could be Marn, here. Main, fifty miles north.

I wouldn't even hazard a guess exactly how your one's pronounced. Here. There. Or anywhere else. But, I'd be wide open to phonetic transcriptions.

McDonagh? No mistaking that one!  ;D
GAITES (Alverstoke / Bath Pre 1850)
CURTIS (Portsmouth & 1800's Berkshire).
BURGE (Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire)
HUNTLEY (Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex, 'Surroundings')

In my experience with that side of the family it’s ‘Morn’ also... but could easily see it being mo-Han or any number of pronounciations throughout the ages!

From the other thread- Patrick in censuses.
It is, however, Owen that you are looking for, I realise.

They are in the 1901 census as MOHAN.

This is the link for the 1911 census

This is a very confusing family. I suspect Patrick's wife used two or three names: Margaret Mangan, Margaret McDonagh and Mary McDonagh. Of course, I could be muddling different families.
