Black Watch
« on: Thursday 14 March 19 12:26 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to trace someone, who joined the Black Watch and another British Regiment in the 1880s or 1890s.  Nothing comes up on findmypast or ancestry, which is where I'm directed by the Black Watch website and I wonder whether there may be another avenue I might try?  Also forces-war-records draws a blank.

Many thanks.

Do you know if he died in Service? If so, his records were most likely  later destroyed, that was quite common,  that is what happened to my grandfather's.

No, he didn't die in service.

If there's no other possible website for Black Watch, I was wondering whether a trip to the National Archives would be worth considering.  However, if everything they have is on findmypast or ancestry, then his record has probably not been preserved?

RW1, Your post re the Black Watch caught my eye, and on a completely different angle, but relating to them, have a look and search on Google for - Shankhouse football club, and importantly Shankhouse Black Watch football.  Shankhouse are just located outside Blyth (Northumberland), but Shankhouse Black Watch football team was formed from their soldiers who were billited at Shankhouse in the early 1900s. By searching for them you will find photographs from that time, - in black and white, but some of the photos have names included.
Best of luck,
PYFB.

PYFB - thanks, fascinating, I've had a look. 1900s would be too late, but there are some from 1880s without names.  Unfortunately, I don't recognise him.

As dowdstree has said, if you post more information (a name would be good at least) you will have the benefit of other eyes looking at the problem.
