Could it be "Hew Terrace"?  A larger snip might give us more clues.   :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I have tried Hew, Kew, New and not come up with anything. It is somewhere in North Leeds in 1860 and is the address on the birth record of an illigitimate child. I wondered if the mother was a servant and the address was one of the large mansions in Leeds at the time but can't find anything to match.
Thank you for looking.

I think Alan Street is a strong possibility. I have gone through all the names on that street in 1861 and found some distant family members living there so it is possible that the mother stayed with them for the birth. It might just be a coincidence but who knows with my family!

Thank you for all your help

Heather.

I think it must be someone's version of Alan Terrace. I have a relative there in the 1871 census, where it's spelled Allen Terrace.

I haven't actually seen it named on a map, but there's a picture of the end of it here:

http://www.leodis.org/display.aspx?resourceIdentifier=2003815_10784548&DISPLAY=FULL

By comparing that with a street map, and noting particularly the bend in Shakespeare Street, I think it's the row of houses between Alan Street and St Agnes' Road:

Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
