I'm pretty new to researching English records, so I would appreciate any advice on this.

I've traced my earliest ancestor on this line (Elizabeth Woodhall 1821-1891) back and found her parents, Solomon Woodhall and Hannah. I've found them on the 1841 and 1851 census, and I have found several siblings for Elizabeth. I've also found marriage records that I believe are them, but I am not sure how to confirm that.

So with marriage records like the ones I have, that don't have parents' names on them, how can I figure out the names of Solomon's parents (or even confirm his wife's surname)?

Also, would it be common for a couple to marry in a different town than the one they lived in? ie. would they marry in the bride's town? In this case, they settled in West Bromwich but the marriage record is from Aston Juxta Birmingham, Warwick, England, and the banns said they were both residents of "Aston Road" in 1815. Is there anything I can do to research that residence?

These are all of the records I have for Solomon in chronological order: https://imgur.com/a/HFBxqZh

Any suggestions or tips would be very much appreciated...I'm not really sure if I've covered all of the appropriate bases or if there's more to do. My concern is that Solomon Woodhall seems to be a common name, there was more than one operating in Staffordshire of about the same age, and there's another couple married in nearby Dudley named Solomon Woodall and Hannah. So I'm nervous about making the wrong connection.

Thanks, Bev. That seems like it is probably him. Do you have any suggestions of how I could confirm it? Unfortunately his father's name isn't listed on his marriage record (or anything else, apparently).

Date and pob from census is crucial to find Parents names so you are lucky.

Did your Soloman name children Thomas/Sarah, naming patterns are often clues.

Are there witnesses to the 1815 Marriage?
If so they may be siblings or parents.
Checking other Bapts of children of Thomas/Sarah you may find they are similar to Soloman/Hannahs childrens names.

On FreeREG
On Sarahs Bapt  1815 Soloman occp is Engine Fitter Up (image looks  similar to me)
Others for him are Coffee Mill Maker/Labourer/Iron Founder/Turner/Pot Turner

Burial of HANNAH Woodhall 16 Mar 1845 WB age 53 (1792), abode Loveday St
+ EMMA Woodhall 22 May 1853 age 18

SARAH Woodhall 28 Apr 1819 age 59 (1760), abode near the Church**

Henrys 1817 Bap has the same address***

So this may be Solomans Mothers Burial 1819

Are there witnesses to the 1815 Marriage?
If so they may be siblings or parents.

The witnesses were Joseph Partridge and Mary Reynolds, so that baptism in your next post seems like it would be for this Hannah. But if they were both from West Bromwich, and settled in West Bromwich, which would they have gotten married in Aston Juxta Birmingham, Warwick and the banns said they were both residents of Aston Road ???

That Sarah Woodhall certainly looks promising, I just don't know how to confirm it.

These are their children, no Sarahs or Thomas' though:

Henry Woodhall
1817–

Edward Woodhall
1819–

Elizabeth Woodhall
1821–1891

Hannah Woodhall
1823–

Mary Ann Woodhall
1825–1871

Timothy Woodhall
1828–

Emma Woodhall
1835-

Hi again.

Soloman/Hannah did name a Daug Sarah, their 1st child;

17 Sep 1815, All Saints, West Bromwich
SARAH Woodhall, Daug of Soloman/Hannah
Abode Birmingham****
Fathers occupation, Engine Fitter Up

So they appear to be living in Birmingham at that time which fits with Marriage being there.

Thank you, Trish. I don't know how I missed this message.

I just find this very difficult because compared to other countries I have worked with, putting together my English tree feels very circumstantial. I have gone through all of Solomon Woodhall and Hannah's locations to see if I can shed any light on the couple.

  • Jan 1815* Solomon Woodhall 21, Hannah Reynolds 22, "both of the Aston Road" (Birmingham), marriage banns Aston, St Peter and St Paul parish, Warwickshire
  • Sep 1815 Sarah baptized at All Saints in West Bromwich, Residence "Birmingham", father's occupation "Engine Fitter up"
  • Nov 1817 Henry baptized at All Saints. Solomon is a "Coffee Mills Maker", abode "near the church"
  • Oct 1819 Edward baptized at All Saints, wife is listed as Ann, occupation "Coffee Mills Maker" and abode "Near the Turk's Head"
  • Jun 1821 Elizabeth baptized at All Saints, father laborer, abode "near the church."
  • Sept 1825 Daughters Hannah and Mary Ann baptized at All Saints. Father "iron founder". Abode was listed as "Heath" (it appears Hannah was older, possibly born in 1823 in Birmingham, per 1841 census)
  • Oct 1828 Timothy baptized at All Saints. Father "Turner". Abode "Maris Green"
  • Jun 1835 Emma baptized at Christ Church, West Bromwich, father "pot turner" abode appears to be "Brinton's Row"
  • Jan 1841 Daughter Hannah was married at the parish church in Aston, Warwickshire. Family residence was given as High Street, West Bromwich. Solomon is listed as a "Holloware Turner." Groom also resident of West Bromwich
  • Jan 1845 Daughter Mary Ann married at St. Margaret's Church in Great Barr, on Birmingham border. Listed as resident in West Bromwich and father is listed as a "holloware turner". Groom also from West Bromwich.
  • March 1845* (maybe) Hannah Woodhall age 53 resident "Loveday St" (Birmingham) death

So assuming this is all the same couple, I'm just trying to make sense of it. So they were living in Birmingham in 1815, but brought their daughter to West Bromwich to be baptized. Then they were living near the church in 1817, then moved across town to near the Turk's Head in 1819, then 1821 back to near the church (heath may be the same location-ish). Then possibly living in Birmingham in 1823 and moved back to West Bromwich in 1825 and baptized their daughters there. Then I don't know where Brinton's Row or Maris Green is, but two daughters get married in Birmingham even though both are living in West Bromwich and marrying men from West Bromwich.

Now if Solomon is the son of Thomas Woodhall (1755-1824) and Sarah Silvester (1757-1819) of West Bromwich, I need to try and find more evidence of someone else in that family living on Aston Road, Birmingham in 1815. Otherwise, I can't figure out how to identify Solomon as being their son other than just deciding he must be based on his age and name.  ???

Hannah may have been home with her Parents when she had Sarah Sept 1815 but Solomon/Hannahs abode was Birmingham at the time and that is where they married.

I think you are pretty safe with his Parents as Thomas/Sarah Woodhall, his burial has Solomon as age 66 (1794)

This is a clue to me;
Jun 1821 Elizabeth baptized at All Saints, father laborer, abode "near the church"****

Burials;
SARAH Woodhall 28 Apr 1819 age 59, abode Near the Church***
THOMAS Woodhall 22 Dec 1824 age 69, abode The Field Near Church***

So it appears that Solomon/Hannah are living with/near his Parents.

This appears to be the Dudley Woodhalls;

1851 Census
Solomon Woodall 46 born Dudley
Hannah Woodall   50
Joseph Woodall   23
Solomon Woodall 17
Elizabeth Woodall 20
Maria Woodall   15
John Smitherman 45
Hannah Woodall   16

Marriage 1825 to Hannah Wallace

All Saints was obviously the preferred Church for the Woodhalls to Bapt their children.
