Aha! it makes sense now. I didn't think he'd served in any combat zones, but it's nice to know that the service he did give was remembered all those years later.

Thanks again DB

Gertrude Crew arrived in Canada 08 Nov 1924. She was going to friend Mrs Lilley at what appears to be about the same address as Leslie was going to when he arrived in Montreal (address is a bit garbled on his imm. form but the city directory has it). Gertrude had arrived Brooklyn New York with her parents 01 Sep 1924; they were going to son/uncle in Brooklyn.

William and Elizabeth (Anderton) Crew must also have come to Canada at some point. They are buried in Lakeview Memorial Gardens Pointe Claire....

Thank you PB

I've often wondered who Mrs Lilley was, and how she became a friend of Leslie before he emigrated & now also, apparently the mutual friend of his future wife.

Hi,

On Leslie's passenger list, friend given is Mr. A. Lilley 45 Bouchier, St. Dennis, Montreal.
From the 1921/22 Montreal Directory, (attached), Lilley, Alf

On Gertrude's passenger list, friend given is Mrs. Lilley, 1478 St. Denis St., Montreal
From the 1924 Montreal Directory, (attached), Lilley, Alfred

I think Alfred is Alfred Charles Lilley b. 1875 Kent, UK, and from his service file, like Leslie, joined the military age 15. He served 20+ years with the Royal Engineers,  married Alice Argue in 1903 Halifax, Nova Scotia. Within that file, there is a letter dated 1921 inquiring about his service medals and he gives his address as 45 Boucher, Montreal.  He migrated to Canada in 1919, and died in Montreal in 1934. His obit. has a notation "London and Liverpool England papers please copy"
