Agonisingly no name for the inn - is there any sort of address?

Just the 'umbrella' address of Shotley Bridge. There don't seem to be any specific addresses beyond that.

Possibly could be identified by neighbours say shopkeeper, baker, blacksmith etc.  It is just so frustrating and so many of the buildings in the neighbourhood that are now houses could have previously been a pub.  I will have to go and have a look!  The Burton House is a prime example of a pub that became a house.

There is an advert in the Newcastle Courant 12 May 1848 referring to a Mrs Ann Hudson of the Cross Swords Inn, Shotley Bridge moving to the King's Arms Commercial Inn in Bishop Auckland. Any connection?

I think this could be the same Ann Hudson as appears with Thomas the Inn Keeper in Shotley Bridge in 1841.

With them in 1841 is a 12 year old Elener. There is a 22 year old Ellen with her in 1851, born Ferryhill.

There is a baptism at Merrington in 1828 of an Eleanor Hudson, daughter of Thomas and Ann, abode Ferryhill.

Also with her in 1851 are Jane aged 20 and Elizabeth aged 19, both also baptised Merrington to Thomas and Ann.

To Millmoor and JenB

I have absolutely no doubt that this is the same person.  The Oley family of sword makers were owners of the Crossed Swords Inn and the Commercial which they combined into one pub - The Crown and Crossed Swords.  I can only assume that the Oleys employed Thomas Hudson as a manager.  The creditors meeting could only be to settle Hudson's debts and the Bishop Auckland connection is a natural progression in that Ann Hudson would be going home after the death of her husband.  I will have to get a copy of that advert as evidence for the story I write up.

Thank you both very much.

Neville

Thank you Trish

I have been writing local history articles on pubs for 25 years now and I have noticed that there are often clusters of innkeepers within families.  So I am sure that this is another one of them and it is the same family

If it's of any interest, there appears to be an Innkeeper (and Butcher) next-door to the Hudsons in 1841.
The entries are very difficult to read, but I think his name might be John Thirlwell, wife Abigale.
