Roadblock to family tree! How can I get around it?
« on: Saturday 16 March 19 19:19 GMT (UK) »
This relative of mine is a major roadblock for many family trees I've run across online... some make the leap to his father being William Finn of Cork but no documents confirm it.  How can I breakdown this particular roadblock faced by many amateur genealogists? I want to know where he was born, marriage records, passage records... everything I can get.

Jeremiah Finn 1811–1855
BIRTH 1811 Ireland •  DEATH 21 SEPTEMBER 1855 • Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA

MARRIED TO:

Barbara E Good BIRTH JUNE 29 1813 (possibly Scotland) • 1813–1897 DEATH 21 MAR 1897 • Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, United States

Welcome to rootschat Finndian,

Where have you looked for records so far?  Any census information?

Hi and welcome to rootschat  ;D

We all hit an end to a line and it is part of acceptance that when you can't find real records to prove an ancestor you stop either until you do find more information to enable you to research further or accept that is as far as you go on that line.

Just 'Ireland' doesn't give you enough to search so it would just be guesswork............ you need a religion, you need at least a townland, so the only way to potentially get those is to find every single record the person generated during their lifetime, starting with his obituory /burial record and working back but even then it is unlikely with the dates you will find the record proof you need
Leicestershire:Chamberlain, Dakin, Wilkinson, Moss, Cook, Welland, Dobson, Roper,Palfreman, Squires, Hames, Goddard, Topliss, Twells,Bacon.

You have probably already seen these, but they say Barbara was also born Ireland (which does not guarantee it is true)

Nothing certain from his birth in Ireland in 1811 until his 1850 federal Census in Detroit listing with Barbara and some kids.

Some relatives online have jumped to these two (listed below) as his parents based solely on the dates lining up and Jeremiah apparently naming FOUR of his kids after his presumed brothers and sisters...William, Catherine, Julia and John. Those are very common names, however... as is FINN. That's not enough to jump on board is it?  A William Finn does show up in Detroit later from Ireland that could be his brother... if that's his brother. In fact, they die 2 years apart.

Jeremiah's potential parents... William Finn 1782-1869 married Julia Noonan (1782- ) and William, Catherine, Julia and John are the matching names of their kids.

Thanks for the Passenger info... I'll see what I can connect!!
