Knowle Hospital Farehem
« on: Sunday 17 March 19 17:48 GMT (UK) »
Has anybody any idea of possible info regarding Knowle Hospital Fareham in the late 1940's, my father had a very seriuos accident in Southampton docks 1945-6 and as a result was certfied 'Temporary Insane' for a long period, he was one of the first to have the  shock wave treatment to the brain, which did not do him any good at all, he died 1953 aged 44.

Hi,

It might be worth contacting Hantsweb,

https://www.hants.gov.uk/librariesandarchives

They seem to have a lot of info about Knowle Hospital,

Your father's records might be closed due to the 100 yaer rule but as a direct descendant you might be able to get them, more info herre,

Many thanks folks, I have tried most of these links, to no avail, I thought as it was some time ago that there maybe something new out there, when you look at these links there is very little that covers the period 1945-1950.

I will try again once Brexit it done and dusted in 25 years time!! ;D ::)

Hi,

I noticed that they had "1853-1978; case books" and "c1940s-c1952; registers of mechanical restraint and seclusion, 1939-59; nurses report books, 1938-77; dispensary books, 1925-34; post mortem report books, 1885-1957; inquest reports, 1951-60; registers of deceased, 1942-82; staff and patients daily numbers books, 1935-80; visiting books" amongst others,

I've always found the Hampshire Record Office really helpful, especially if you know dates and places of the info you are looking for. I still think it would be borth giving them a phone call.

Hello,

In 2012, I wrote to the Hampshire County Council, Archives and local studies services to request details about my great grandfateher who was an inmate of Knowle House for some years.  As my mother was considered his next of kin the HCC sent full transcripts of all entries relating to him in the statutory hospital registers, including medical assessments at the time he entered the hospital, and notice relating to his death.

I hope this helps,
regards,
Angela
