He certainly is and no wonder I couldn't find him - transcribed as b Staffordshire.  Ancestry strikes again ::)

Hi, thanks for all posts. Robert did indeed die in 1925. Mary Ann died 1952. I strongly believe she did not marry between 1881 census and 1888 when she had her first child with Robert. Lucy her daughter was born 1882. If she did marry then it's between 1882-1888?? in London?? with the father as James occupation Tailor, but I cant find one, the challenge is can anyone else?

Thanks all,
John

Hi, forgot to ask in last post. In 1881 ref rg11 434 62 23 Robert is a railway porter aged 26 living with a "cousin" Alice Prior" aged 20 born Plymouth Devon. Do you think this could well be AVICE as according to previous post Avice Hammond was born Stonehouse, Plymouth and ages agree.

Yes I think you could be onto something here - “cousin” may well be a lie to conceal cohabitation outside wedlock.  So perhaps he went on to marry Avice but it didn’t work out for whatever reason (they don’t seem to have had children in the marriage) and each went their separate ways.  In those circumstances it’s not surprising to find they didn’t marry their next partners.

Hi, just found the birth of Caroline AVICE Prior mmn Hammond.ref march q 1882 Shoreditch. Sadly she died that same quarter. Might well be worth getting her birth cert to get full details etc.

The following is your reply re possibility of Mary Ann Gosling having married  between 1881-1887

Maud Florence was b 1888

Robert married in 1883 to Avice Hammond??

Who was Lucy?

Lucy was Mary Ann Gosling’s illegitimate daughter (baptism register helpfully states explicitly that she was illegitimate!).
