Woodhead family of Holmfirth
« on: Monday 18 March 19 06:31 GMT (UK) »
Wondering if anyone can assist in finding information on the Woodhead family from Holmfirth. John Woodhead was born 26 Feb 1808 and christened 8 March 1808, in the Lane Independent Chapel, Holmfirth. And that's about all I can find online from the other side of the world. He married an Elizabeth (surname unknown) and they later lived at Pendleton. His parents may have been a John Woodhead and a Sarah (unknown surname). Thanks.

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Possible marriage for John Woodhead and Sarah Sykes - Almondbury (Huddersfield) - 8 August 1796 - by Licence.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi

Could be John Woodhead born Holmfirth and living at Pendlebury he was married to an Elizabeth ? (surname could be Hotchkiss) and found children; Richard 1831, Mary, 1834, Ellen 1841, Elizabeth 1847 & Martha 1853 all from Pendlebury.

The records I have found on my great grandmother, Ann Woodhead (1837-1910) show her family to have moved to Pendlebury, and I have photos of her and her husband, Samuel Davis, taken by a studio in Pendlebury. The census records I have seen agree that her father, John Woodhead, was a bootmaker. But I can't find out anything about Elizabeth Woodhead or his parents, other than the possibility they were John and Sarah.

As J R Ellam has suggested Elizabeths maiden surname may be Hotchkiss.  Ellens possible birth registration on the index states this and in 1841  HO107/543 bk2 f32 p18 There are an Elizabeth and a William Hotchkiss living with them.

Marriage 30 Jan 1831 St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich, Lancashire
John Woodhead - abode Prestwich
Elizabeth Hotchkiss - abode Prestwich
Witnesses John Isherwood & Abrm. Kay

Thank you! That sounds quite possible. Have just suggested my cousin a few times removed who lives in England to check this correspondence because it could explain the question we were asking ...why did John Woodhead leave Holmfirth?  I'll follow up in the morning (Sydney time).  John
