Tunstall Baptisms
« on: Monday 18 March 19 15:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Does anyone have access to the Tunstall parish registers? I am looking for a baptism of brothers, John Sawyer 1771 and James Sawyer 1772.

Can anyone help?

Many Thanks.
Sue.

High Sue,

In Tunstall transcripts (Ex SFHS) there are a few familes having children;
18-4-1771 James Sawyer s/o Devereraux & Judith
12-4-1772 John       "        "            "              "

10-4-1772 James     "        "   John & Sarah
5-1-1770   John       "        "       "         "

Which ones to go for??

Hi Alan,

Thanks for looking that up for me. I do appreciate it. I think these boys were sons of John and Sarah as John was the elder.
However, there’s obviously more than one Sawyer family in the village. I was hoping it was just the one that I could maybe trace back to my ancestor, a Mary Sawyer born 1733-1803 who married in Tunstall 22/10/1753, Edward Hunt, a farmer in the Chillesford area.
Would you mind looking to see if there is a baptism in Tunstall for Mary Sawyer in 1733?
I have come across a James Sawyer B 1738 D 1808, Mary Sawyer B 1733 D 1808 and a Martha Sawyer B 1731- D1731 all from Tunstall. I have wondered if James and Martha might be a brother and sister to my Mary?

Thanks again,

Sue.

Hi Sue,

I'm not able to help as my records for Tunstall start at 1754 (CD).

The Suffolk FHS  have a search facility which may be able to help you further at this address;
https://suffolkfhs.co.uk/shop/search-services.html

At the moment they haven't released a CD of the Orford Deanery which covers, amongst others,  the parish of Tunstall for the years upto 1753.

Disclaimer; I'm not associated withn the SFHS, just a happy user of their CDs/

Sorry I can't help more.

this may or may not help. I have the Suffolk tithe appointments book  for Orford Deanary compiled in 1840.

it lists Devereaux Sawyer as Saxmundham parish (occupier 1-20 acres) but does have John in Tunstall as an occupier not owner 20+ acres. other Sawyers named in Tunstall are james (owner 20+ acres), mary (owner less than 1 acre) Samuel (owner less than 1 acre) William ( occupier 1-20 acres)
