How did he get to New Zealand
« on: Monday 18 March 19 19:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have a John Sykes born 1829.  I know he emigrated to Australia but he arrived via New Zealand.

I have him arriving in Melbourne from Dunedin on the Blue Jacket in April 1862.  So I’m trying to establish when and how he got to New Zealand.

I’ve viewed the voyages of this ship and can find nothing departing the UK which would fit. It’s last listed direct voyage to New Zealand was in 1860.  Which leaves me with 3 options.
1. He spent time in New Zealand then travelled on.
2. He came via a different ship, although I can’t find anything on Ancestry.
3. He had already left the UK at an earlier date and caught a ship from outside the UK.

He also appears to be missing on the UK census for 1851 & 1861 which makes me believe he left UK earlier.  Once in Australia he appears until his death in 1910 as a publican/hotel keeper.

Any ideas on other places to look would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried searching the NZ newspapers for any mention of him there?
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

This site gives lots of links for passengers to NZ (I think it was off-line for some time while ancestry sorted themselves out, but is back again now).

As you can't find him in 1851 or 1861, was he in the army? In the early 1860s thousands of British troops were sent out to fight in the New Zealand wars, and some stayed on afterwards.

Hi Wivenhoe

Yes that’s him.  I don’t hold his death certificate my interest lies in him being a great x Uncle who was joined by other relatives 20 years later.

I had been told he had a wife Anne who died in 1894, but I was trying to work on him 1st.

I’ve tracked him through Gazette and publican licences.

Thanks

"...but I was trying to work on him 1st. "

You do not know when or where he was born. You do not have names of his parents.....any siblings.....if / when / where / who he married. You do not know names of any children...their birth dates or places......?

If you do have any of this information can you please give it.

But you know he is the man who arrived in Melbourne from Dunedin, 1862?

What family members joined him in NSW?

I think you need to see his death certificate.  There is a Will Probate file for him at NSW State Records that might be useful for your research.
