Thomas Roberts
« on: Tuesday 19 March 19 09:23 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the marriage/marriages of Thomas Roberts.

This is what I have on him so far:

b 1797 Hinton St Mary, Dorset
d 1868 Epsom, Surrey

Census 1841, 1851, 1861 - all living Epsom, Surrey.  He was a confectioner.

Two daughters (that I know of) Caroline, and Ann.

From the 1841 census, his first wife, and mother of the two girls was Ann.
From the 1851 census, the second wife was Mary, born Wiltshire.
I have no details for either of these women, although a possible death for Ann is 1844 in Epsom.

Would be most grateful for any assistance in this.  A fresh pair of eyes often comes up with something new.

Thanks.

Ann who died in 1844 was aged 47.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks for your replies.

I have the marriage of Thomas' parents, John and Sarah.  The document is not very clear, so I have Sarah's surname before marriage as Doddrell.

There is also another niece mentioned on the 1881.Susannah (b1841?)

I need to dig a little deeper! And of course, this now brings up the question why they came to be in London/Surrey.

A few things

Have you considered the following marriage yet?
Marriage 17 Jan 1819 - Melcombe-Regis, Dorset – Thomas Roberts/Robertt (Bachelor) & Ann BEALE (Widow) by Banns - Witnesses: Priscilla Pearce & George Read

Are these the possible baptisms of their daughters (re timeline for first marriage)?
Christening 5 Sep 1819 Ewell, Surrey - Caroline Roberts daughter of Thomas Roberts and Deborah Ann
Birth 12 Nov 1820 / Christening 7 Oct 1821 - Epsom, Surrey - Ann Roberts daughter of Thomas Roberts and Ann
Birth 13 May 1823 / Christening 1 Jan 1826  / Death 25 Jan 1830 - Epsom Surrey - Eliza Roberts daughter of Thomas Roberts and Ann

Could Paul Dodwell and Mary have been siblings?
Paul Dodwell (father of Eliza) was probably born in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire and christened in Cliffe-Pypard, Wiltshire in 1814 as the son of John and Mary.
Thomas’ wife Mary was born in “Cliff, Wiltshire” abt 1810, while Paul Dodwell had a sister Mary christened in Cliffe-Pypard, Wiltshire in 1809.

PS
I’m wondering whether this Mary Dodwell married James Allen on 26 Dec 1833 (Old Church, Saint Pancras, London) because on 5 Oct 1850 a Mary Allen marries a Thomas Roberts in Saint George Southwark Parish, Surrey

Many thanks for the ideas.  I don't have a lot of time this week to investigate, but will do so as soon as possible.
In the meantime, if anyone else has ideas I would be grateful.

Finally getting around to digging a little further into this one!

It looks as if the marriage on 5 Oct 1850 could be a good match. The ages fit in with the census details I have.
One thing that prevents me from going along with the other marriage (17 Jan 1819) is that neither the bride or groom could sign.

On the later certificate, Thomas has clearly signed.

Unfortunately, it really is the first wife I am looking for, since she is the mother of daughter, Ann.

Now to look back into Thomas' parents.....
