James Henry Burdekin, of Foolow, born c.1877
« on: Tuesday 19 March 19 17:49 GMT (UK) »
He appears in Foolow's 1891 census -
Josiah Burdekin, aged 57 - Farmer.
Ann Burdekin, aged 55.
Fanny Burdekin, aged 15.
James H. Burdekin, aged 13 - Scholar.

Ann Burdekin was born at Eyam.

James joined the Manchester Regiment in September 1896, giving his age as 19, his occupation as a labourer, and his place of birth as Eyam. After garrison duty in Gibraltar, the 1st Battalion was shipped to South Africa in late September 1899, and were then moved to Ladysmith, just before the outbreak of war. James was part of the battalion that was in Ladysmith when the Boers surrounded it; after the end of the siege, he was promoted to Lance Corporal, and after the war's end - 31st May 1902 - he saw service in Singapore. In 1904 he returned to the UK in poor health, and a concert was given in Foolow, early November that year, for his benefit (the newspaper report of the benefit gave his full name).

The death of a James Henry Burdekin was registered at Bakewell in the 4th Quarter of 1918. If this is the same James Henry Burdekin, then I'll order a copy of his death certificate. Can anyone confirm that the two Burdekins are the same man, please?

His birth was registered September qtr 1877 www.freebmd.org.uk

Strictly speaking he was 41 in Dec qtr 1918 but not at all unusual for ages to be slightly out.  No other James Henry Burdekin in that age frame so I think you can safely order the cert.

Don't forget that pdf copies are cheaper

Thanks, Tazzie and Carole. I did look up memorial inscriptions for Eyam churchyard, but he's not mentioned.

Need to contact the church to find out if his grave site is known.
