John Cosby c1750 Leighton Buzzard & sons Thomas & James
« on: Tuesday 19 March 19 20:59 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I wonder if I might prevail upon your kindness again and ask whether anyone would mind doing a look up request for John Cosby please? He is another brick wall in the tree and the Leighton Buzzard records seem to be incomplete on Ancestry and Family Search.

I would like to find out what his wife's maiden name was, when they married and if they had more than 2 children if possible please?

John with a guessed birth of around 1750 marries an Ann ?? (unknown date) and they have 2 children that I know of, I descend from James.

Birth of Daughter Maria Cosby(1774–)
1774 • Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, England

Birth of Son James Cosby(1779–1842)
Abt. 1779 • Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, England

Thanks for reading my message,
Best wishes,
Emma

Hi John,
Thank you so much. I have really struggled getting into from the 1700s in Leighton Buzzard and really appreciate your help. It is a great feeling to move past something you have been stuck with.

Best wishes Emma

Re.the children of John & Ann Cros(s)by ....

Burials at Leighton Buzzard #
8 Oct 1769 John, infant son of John Crossby
10 Apr 1776 Catherine, daughter of John Crosby
18 Jun 1779 Maria, daughter of John Crosby

Later the parents are buried #
23 Oct 1784 John Cosby/Crasby labourer, poor
30 Dec 1786 Ann Crasby widow, poor

Prior to John & Ann's marriage in 1765, there was another marriage on 7 Dec 1741 of John Crossby of Eggington to Ann Smith of LB. They baptised Mary on 1 Jan 1743-43 and Sarah on 22 Sept 1745

Ann wife of John Crossby, labourer was buried 21 May 1764

I cannot find them baptising a son John nor can I find a burial for this John Crossby; and datewise it's very convenient that wife Ann dies May 1764 & then John Crossby marries another Ann Smith in Feb 1765 so I am considering that this may be the same man, although this 2nd marriage don't say he is a widower or bachelor - who knows ?

Thank you very much for the burials, I could find nothing on line and it was like they had vanished or moved on. That must have been heartbreaking to loose so many of their children.

That is very interesting about the marriages and both being to an Ann Smith (later Cosby relatives married into the Romany Draper/Smith family so perhaps this an early connection with the same Smiths - or not!).

If John is the same John in both instances (like you said you can't find the baptism of a John for the first couple to account for the second John/Ann Smith union and the death of one Ann and marriage to the other occurring sequentially again points to this being a possibility) then he was 59 years old when his last son James was born in 1779!

That is really interesting, thanks again for your help.

Best wishes,
Emma
