Collins/Hart links to Galway
« on: Wednesday 20 March 19 11:14 GMT (UK) »
my husbands first Collins relative to arrive in Australia was John Collins who went to Bendigo for the goldrush. There ins 1860 he married Mary Hart in St. Killians church. he stated that his parents were timothy collins and mary ryan from Galway and her parents were patrick hart and catherine grady also from galway. have not yet been successful in finding them or any other links to Ireland so wondered if anyone else was researching this family or had info on how to find this pari. have also had issues in finding the ship he came on or the year as there are so many john collins who went to Australia. any help to get in the right direction would be appreciated.

A lot would depend on his age, was he 10 or 70 when he arrived etc...

https://registers.nli.ie/parishes?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=Galway but you don't know which Parish.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I think he was about 30 or at least late twenties when he arrived in Australia. sorry I don't know the parish at all - just have what I found on the marriage record which just said galway for both of them - no cities, towns, parishes etc. when searching on Ancestry had found some records for children born to parents timothy Collins and mary ryan but that was in Westmeath I think. can't find anything though for a john Collins with these parents.

many thanks for those links - it certainly sounds like them. when we visited the Bendigo library family research section they showed us a book called the Eaglehawk & district Pioneer Register. there was an item in there the showed John Collins miner, born c1830 cty galway Ire,son Timothy Collins labourer & mary ryan,1872 dir miner caldwells rd e/h.
spouse:5.9.1860 St. K Bgo Vic mary hart born c1833 cty galway ire,dau Patrick hart labourer & Catherine grady. witness to marriage - john Halloran & winefrid Coffey. from that we'd been able to find their children, grandchildren etc but haven't been able to find ships record of his or her arrival nor anything in Ireland.

You need to see this death certificate -
14474 / 1886 COLLINS John   parents Timothy / Mary RYAN           @ Sandhurst

Wife Mary is alive when John dies. Even if Mary is not named as the informant, Mary would be available as source of information. The death certificate will have useful information for your research.

From the marriage certificate, 1860, can you please give -

John COLLINS.........how is his age given.......his occupation.....
Mary HART..............how is her age given....
Patrick HART...........is his occupation given.....
Timothy COLLINS....is his occupation given.....

Any information about residences?

John COLLINS.....Mary HART......Winefrid COFFEY.....John HALLORAN.........

Of these four people, who signs the register...who gives their mark (x)....

"...1872 dir miner caldwells rd e/h."   What does this mean?

no worries will try and get a copy of the death certificate to see what extra I can find.  I believe that the phrase '1872 dir miner caldwells' refers to the 1872 directory of miners in Bendigo showing he  was a miner at the Caldwells mine.
