Marychurch Jenkins
« on: Wednesday 20 March 19 15:30 GMT (UK) »
My aim is to find out about an ancestral line, tracing back from Joseph Marychurch Jenkins, who was baptised in 1857 in Chester and who died in Australia, having taught Classics at Hale School in Perth. His parents were Charles and Matilda. Charles was baptised in Haverfordwest in 1826. I do not think that Charles bore Marychurch as a given name.

Charles's father's name was also Joseph Marychurch Jenkins. He was born in c. 1803.

I have not gone back any further in time. I know that Marychurch is a well-reputed name in Haverfordwest and am hoping that someone will know when the Marychurch name first appeared in this line of the Jenkinses. I assume that, at some stage, a Miss Marychurch married a Mr Jenkins. Can anyone - Drosybont, perhaps, who specialises in the Marychurches - shed any light?

Thank you.

Charles Henry Jenkins, son of Charles (schoolmaster) & Matilda Jenkins of St Mary on the Hill , bapt 19 Jan 1856 at St Mary Chester

Joseph Marychurch Jenkins, son of Charles (schoolmaster)& Matilda Jenkins of St Mary's Hill bpt 5 April 1857  at St Mary Chester

so baptised 5th April 1857 at St Marys ,Chester - looks like the family lived on St Marys Hill and Charles Jenkins was a Teacher .

Mary Louisa Jenkins, parents Charles (National school master) & Matilda Jenkins of St Mary's Hill, bpt 2 May 1859 at St Mary Chester

...
now living in Castle Street in 1861

Adah Matilda bp 21 Jan 1861 St Mary, Chester
Charles still a schoolmaster
.............................................
moved around a bit didn't they - now in Bridge Street in 1863

Frank Herbert Jenkins bp  27th september 1863 St Mary Chester.  Charles still a schoolmaster
...
Percy Tanner - same address bp 10 March 1866 St Mary Chester.
...

so back to Castle Street - I presume they lived in School Houses provided by the Government ..

where was Joseph  born c 1803 ??   was it Wales or Chester ?

the vast majority of surname Marychurch appear to have been born in Gloucester - but I have found this
Joseph Marychurch born Haverfordwest, Pembroke 1803 - could it be possible ?  he is a WIDOWER and his servant is Sarah Jenkins .
.................................

1861 Census St Martins, Pembrokeshire,
Bridge Street
Joseph Marychurch age 58 Widower
Occupation    Timber Merchant b Haverfordwest,
Sarah Jenkins    Servant    F    19    Llangwm, Pembrokeshire

I am just wondering if the Jenkins was ADDED IF Charles b 1826  was born Marychurch and not in fact Jenkins ???  and - if Sarah was actually related to Joseph b 1803 ?
anyway ....I am sure this puzzle will involve the Marychurch and Jenkins families from Haverfordwest
good luck

1826 Bapt just has Charles Father as Joseph.
He also appears to have just married Ann Price in 1824 with just that name.

Early children of Joseph/Ann have Father as just Joseph but from Thomas Gibbs 1833 he adds the Marychurch to his christian names.
(10 children to them 1825-1841 on FreeREG)

1841 Census you have I presume:
Joseph Jenkins   38 Housebuilder
Ann Jenkins   40
Charles Jenkins   14
Benjamin Jenkins 11
Martha Jenkins   9
Thomas Jenkins   6
George Jenkins   5
Elizabeth Jenkins 3
Mary Jenkins   1

1851 Joseph is in Haverfordwest born c 1803 St Paulk, Somerset (from Transcription!)

There is a St Paul in Somerset and also one in Bristol Glous from a bit of googling.

Thank you to garstonite, whiteout7 and trish1120 for your input.

To garstonite, the names of the children born after 1861 were new to me. I have not been able to find the family in the 1871 census. I think that Percy Jenkins’s second name is probably Fanner (his mother’s maiden name). Joseph was baptised in St Paul’s Bristol, according to the 1851 census, although I have not seen the baptismal record itself. This fits with your observation about Marychurches and Gloucestershire. It seems to me that Charles Jenkins is the son of Joseph Marychurch Jenkins, according to the 1826 list of baptisms from St Mary’s Haverfordwest. Thomas Gibbs Jenkins was baptised there by the same vicar in 1833. Charles is styled Charles Gibbs Jenkins in the 1849 record of his marriage to Matilda Fanner in Pembroke Dock. This seems to tie this particular group of people to one family. The master-servant relationship between a Marychurch and a Jenkins is interesting.

Trish1120 input also led me to a Jenkins/Marychurch connection, where one of the witnesses to the marriage of Joseph Jenkins (b 1803) and Ann Price is S Marychurch.

I agree that Joseph does not have a middle name at his marriage and at Charles’s baptism. The first use of Marychurch as Joseph’s middle name that I have found is at Thomas Gibbs Jenkins’s baptism in 1833.

The 1851 census manuscript, not the transcription, shows JMJ’s birth place as St Paul’s Bristol.

It is interesting that Trish1120 says that JMJ’s death notice gives his middle name as Mary Church. The manuscript version of the burial notice definitely gives JMJ’s middle name as Marychurch – no space between the “y” and the “c”, the latter being lower case. My wife often has her Marychurch middle name split into two in error: perhaps it happened in the 19th century too! I agree that daughter Ann’s baptism reads “Ann Church Jenkins”. Was the vicar having an off day?

I am not sure how to find Joseph’s parents. Searching for the baptism record in St Paul’s Bristol drew a blank. Can someone advise, please?

Sorry, I only saw this today.  Yes, the Marychurch name is sometimes written or transcribed with the two parts separated, though not by the family themselves.  When I began working on this family a while back I found myself wondering why nobody thought it odd that there were men in Cardiff with Mary as a middle name.  I'm pleased to find someone else interested in them.

The source which may help with this query is the PCC Will of Joseph Marychurch, a Bristol mariner, probate 8 July 1808.  It gives useful details of family relationships and includes provision for "the children of my late sister Ann Jenkins namely Ann Jenkins and Joseph Jenkins."  I believe this sister was Ann Marychurch b Haverfordwest 1776, daughter of Solomon Marychurch b 1727 d 1804, a Haverfordwest tailor, and his wife Anne (surname Thomas from her first marriage, not sure what her maiden name was).

Unfortunately I have been unable to find a marriage between Ann Marychurch and a Jenkins.  I didn't have any details for the daughter and son Ann and Joseph Jenkins previously, so it's good to see what is in the posts here about Joseph and his descendants.

I hope this helps.

In 1851 Charles and Matilda are in Havorfordwest with a son Edwin aged 5 months. Charles is listed as a carpenter.
