Searching for additional information on John Bickley 1824-1916  Birth info is from headstone and birth date could be 10 or 20.  Need to visit marker again.  Stone states native of Devon.

He married Grace Hunt 1833-1915 in Brushford, Devon 9 Feb 1855.  He is a widower and his occupation is listed as Miller.  The death record lists his father as John Bickley.

Canadian census documents indicate immigration in about 1857.   They settled in Dorchester, Middlesex County Ontario and it appears they had no children.

No success finding a first marriage or his family in 1841 census .

In 1851 he was also listed as a Widower, aged 26, a miller, living at home with his father John BICKLEY (a farmer) in Sandford. He is also shown in Sandford at home in 1841.

So in 1841 we have

John Bickly 40 farmer (father of John 1851-1901)

In 1851 we have 'my" John a widow and Miller with father and his new wife Jane.

I haven't been able to find Jane and John Sr. marrying.

I find a John Bickley marrying a Sarah Morrish 3 Sept 1834 in Sandford, Devon which fits place but  doesn't seem to fit either John Senior or Junior as Junior was born about 1824 based on Census.

Looks like spelling of name could be a challenge.

Assuming any spouse death would be registered in the Crediton RD I looked at deaths from 1841-1851 and found Sarah Bickley in 1846. 

However - GRO online shows her as aged 51so I suspect she was John's mother Sarah as per 1841 entry

Possibility that John jnr was living outside of Sandford at the time of marriage and wife's death

The record I find for a marriage of a John Bickley and Sarah Morrish 03 Sep 1834 in Sandford, Devon has me perplexed.  I have not seen a document but I wonder if there could be a transcription error and year is incorrect.

I also found a baptism for an Edward Bickley 01 Jan 1835 with parents John Bickley and Sarah in Sandford.   As noted earlier by CaroleW, he appears in an 1851 census in Sandford that lists Emma Bickley, Daughter Age 20, Edward, Son, Age 16 and John Lee, son-in-law(step son), age 5 but no adults.

An 1841 census search for Edward finds a record in Sandford  that has an Edward Bickley born 1835 which sort of fits the baptism and he is with a William Moorish 76-80 years and Charlotte Moorish 25-39 years.  No relationship given but seems to point to John marrying Sarah Moorish and William is her father and Charlotte a sister perhaps. However , marriage date seems way off

The family shown for 1841 and 1851 are clearly the right one.

However, the 'Sarah' shown on 1841 is not John junior's mother - she is only the mother of Edward.

The marriage you mention to Sarah Morrish is correct - when John Bickley married her 3/9/1834 Sandford he is shown as a widower.

John junior's baptism is bp.27/12/1824 Sandford, son of John and Mary.   His siblings (with exception of Edward) all show mother as Mary.

The likely 1st marriage for John senior is to Mary Galling 17/6/1821 Crediton.   

Mary Bickley bc.1802 buried 3/1/1832 Sandford.

Can't, as yet, find likely 1st marriage for John junior.

Wherever John junior married it wasn't in Devon - can account for all the John Bickley marriages between 1841 and 1851 (one being his father in 1849) and they were all sons of someone else.

So John junior must have married out of the county and presumably returned to Sandford after the death of his wife.  (There are only 3 burials in Sandford 1841-1851 and all far to old to be a wife for John so first wife presumably buried in the area where married - wherever that was.)
