Driver John William Soutar RASC died 1941
« on: Wednesday 20 March 19 22:15 GMT (UK) »
I thought this soldier had a war grave in Logierait Cemetery, Perthshire but I have been round the cemetery twice last year and couldn't find it. I also checked Logierait burials on line and he is not mentioned. I'd be grateful for some help as I want to find the grave and photograph it.

CWGC says grave 67 Logierait Parish Churchyard.  Is that the same as where you looked?

Janes - Keynsham and Bristol area.
Heale/Hale - Keynsham, Somerset
Vincent - Illogan/Redruth, Cornwall.  Moved to Sculcoates, Yorkshire; Grass Valley, California; Timaru, New Zealand and Victoria, Australia.
Williams somewhere in Wales - he kept moving

Couple of mentions in Newspapers of his burial in Logierait churchyard on March 12th 1941 and mourners.
He died in an accident on active service, did he die abroad or possibly in the UK? So possibly an ordinary grave (as opposed to War Grave)
Perhaps there was no headstone or it has been lost, he is commemorated here http://www.scottishmilitaryresearch.co.ukwarmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ftopic255-0-asc-0.html
A plan of the cemetery, if it exists, would help greatly, it would be worth contacting local departments that cover cemetery records in that area.

Thankyou both for your replies. Yes, he's supposed to be in Logierait graveyard but we looked for it on two different occasions last year. Now that we know he's definitely there we'll go again when we're up north this year. It's a small graveyard - no idea how we missed it. We couldn't see a CWGC stone so it must be a family grave. Thanks again - much appreciated.

Do contact the local councils graveyard department.
If it's an unused graveyard they are passed to the council to maintain.
If they are like my local council they were absolutely marvelous.
I was contacted as I'm on the ancestry register for people willing to find graves. Someone from far away contacted me for details of an ancestor.
I first phoned the office to make sure they had the details.
After that sent them an Email with all the details. Two days later I had an Email from them with exact location and even a map.

Thankyou 'Dyingout'. I will contact the local council though it's such a small graveyard I don't know how we missed the grave - twice! Some family graves are difficult to read because they are sandstone and wear away. Many burial grounds have grave photos on a website e.g. Alyth but not this one unfortunately. When I find and photograph the stone I'll put it on Flickr for all to see.

You could try contacting  the minister of Logierait Parish Church. This is often quicker than the local Council.

He is Rev. Neil Glover

Most ministers are very helpful.

The CWGC site indicates that he is commemorated by a private memorial. That would be by the choice of the next of kin. If that memorial is now damaged beyond repair or has disappeared then the CWGC will erect one of their headstones.

I didn't know that. I hope to be there later this year and I'll check on it's state of repair. Strangely, the first time I went I found a family grave with a mention of 'killed in France' but it wasn't Soutar. Thank you for replying.
