Theophilus Jones Smith or Theophilus Isles Smith
« on: Thursday 21 March 19 05:08 GMT (UK) »
Sorry, posted by mistake in Somerset, it should be in Gloucestershire. --Henrietta Smith, wife of Samuel Green, was born in 1774, and died on 27 May 1830 in Bristol. Her obituary in The Gentleman's Magazine states that she is the sister of Theophilus Jones Smith, Gent, of Oporto, Portugal. I can't find a man of that name, but I have found a Theophilus Isles Smith, wine merchant, of Oporto, born in Bristol who is very possible the same man. There is quite a bit of information on-line about Theophilus Isles Smith, who had 3 wives and 13 children. He had two brothers, Omerod and Mathison. I'd like to find out the parents of Henrietta Smith and Theophilus Jones Smith and/or the parents of Theophilus Isles Smith, Omerod and Mathison. Can anyone help please? Henietta and Samuel's marriage record (27 Feb 1808, Bath) didn't have the father's name. Samuel's first wife was Sophia Smith (married 10 Apr 1790, Bristol), who may or may not be related to Henrietta. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you very much for your help Capetown and Ladyhawk, I'll be following up those leads. The records I had for the christening and marriage didn't have his parent's names, so this is really helpful. Thanks again.

Ladyhawk - thank you very much for all the additional information. I had found some of it but not all of it. It’s all good stuff!

Capetown – Thank you also for your extra information. The John Smith / Martha Iles marriage sounds likely. It’s strange that Theophilus is recorded as having Jones and Isles as a middle name on different records, but it doesn’t look as though he was given a middle name at his christening, so perhaps he used both at different times. I wouldn’t have guessed that Onesiphorus was Omerod, but it’s a great name!

I’m not currently in the UK, but I’m coming back in April for a short visit and spending a day at Bristol Archives to look through the parish records and directories, also to look up wills, so hopefully I’ll find out more. Thank you once again for all these fantastic leads!
