Bath - alongside the River Avon
« on: Thursday 21 March 19 11:00 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone remember please what industry was alongside the river - I know Stothert & Pitt were there for many, many years and also at one time there was a factory that produced ladies corsets I believe.
Thank you.   :)

I have just Googled "Bath Old Trade Directory" and found a treasure chest of answers to your question!
Thomas, Davies, Jones, Walters, Daniel in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. That should narrow it down a bit!
Vincent: Fressingfield, Suffolk, Stockton & Sunderland.
Murtha/Murtaugh: Dundalk & Sunderland
Ingram: Cairnie by Huntly, Scotland then Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
Bardouleau: London - in memory of my stepmother Annie Rose née Bardouleau who put up with a lot from me.

Just off the top of my head .......
Bairds Maltings
Bayers Corset factory (previously a maltings)
Chancellors Builders
Hill Leigh Timber Merchants
Bath Cabinet Makers (aka Flight Works)
Bath Gas Works (Bath Gas Light and Coke Co)
Corpration Depot (Destructor Works)
Midland Railway Station and Goods Yard and Engine sheds
as well as Stothert and Pitt as mentioned.
Depends how far along the riverside you want to go. If you go far enough to Twerton this is where there were woolen and cloth mills (Carrs)
Oscar Windebank Timber Merchants
Nurse, Musther, Smith, Julnes, Rogers, Parsons,Grieves(Greaves,Greeves),Wood,Cray,Scrine,Shellard,Greenstock,

Perhaps the most famous industry was brass making. There was an important site at or near Keynsham. There is a brassmills pub but I am not sure if it is on the site or near by.

Kind regards

I read the word "Keynsham" and, as a child of the fifties and sixties, the first thing I hear in my head is:

"Kay-eee... why-end...ess-aitch... a-emm... Keynsham... Bristol"

208!!!

Completely off-topic but then I am most of the time :P

The Brassmill, Avon Mill Lane, is on the site of the Brass Works.
