Photograph dating - Abertillery
« on: Thursday 21 March 19 16:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I am gong through the box of family photos, and would like to try to narrow down who this could be by possibly dating it please?
The image is on quite thick card, with the image overlaid/stuck on. It says J. Cuthbert in the bottom left, and 58 Tillery St. Abertillery in the bottom right.
Many thanks for your help

I would say most likely early 1900s.

J Cuthbert operated at this address in the 1890s, and continued to operate from other addresses to the mid 1920s.

Thanks sonofthom
that would put the age of the photo to 1890 -1900, unless the photographer continued to use old printed paper card - a possibility?

To tweak the date a bit it's mid to late 1890's so 1896-99.

Thanks Jim
this helpfully takes out two contenders:
-husbands grandmother (born 1890)
-husbands great grandmother (died 1890)

So this may be the sister of my husbands grandfather; she was born 1871 and was living in Nantyglo in the census.

I think the person in the image could be mid to late twenties?

I think that Joseph Cuthbert was in business before 1896 - see the attached link:-
https://outoftheblueartifacts.com/photographers-abertillery-and-district/
This dates him at no. 58 from 1891; Genuki also lists him as being there in 1891. He seems to have been an interesting individual - I wonder what brought him all the way from Banff to set up business in Wales?
