Tracing WWI Photos
« on: Thursday 21 March 19 21:28 GMT (UK) »
Am I right in thinking that most WW1 soldiers had their photo taken after enlistment? I know many records were destroyed in WW2, but where might I find a photo of a specific soldier?

If it helps, I'm looking for Private Cecil Charles Turner. He was born in Norfolk, served with 1st battalion Essex regiment & is memorialised in Arras, France.

I don't think the service records had photographs; I've not found any in records that I have researched.  Most likely place is with their family or possibly in a local newspaper, parish magazine or a trade/business journal;  long shot would be in regimental archives.

I think your best chance would be if someone researching the same person may have an online tree on Ancestry with a photo, or as Nanny Jan says, local newspapers. The family would be responsible for providing a photo to the newspaper if they had one.
The Great War Archive do have some photos of regimental groups.
