James Sherman born 1844
« on: Friday 22 March 19 05:47 GMT (UK) »

I need a marriage date for James Sherman born 1844 in either New Brunswick or U.S.A. and Sarah Jane Douglas or Douglass born about 1852 in New Brunswick I believe.

I am still in search of parents of James Sherman born 1844 married Sarah Jane Douglas, James and Sarah had the following children all there children were born in New Brunswick Canada.

Walter James Sherman born abt 1873

Howard valentine Sherman born abt 1877 married Margaret Blanche Gibson

Mary Ann Sherman born abt 1879 married John Fredrick Blair

Andrew Cameron Sherman born abt 1880 married Amy Marshal

Mable Irene Sherman born abt 1887 married Thomas McKnight

Martha Matilda Sherman born abt 1889 married Pete Peterson

Nina Jane Sherman born abt 1892 1st married Walter Libby, 2nd married C.D. Hayford

I am seeking info on parents of James Sherman born 1844,where was he born ? Who were his parents ? When did he and Sarah Jane Douglas get married ? Were they married in New Brunswick or U.S.A.

James Sherman is buried in the Rockland cemetery in McAdam New Brunswick Canada, his daughter Martha Matilda Peterson (Sherman) is buried with him.

We know that Mable Irene McKnight (Sherman) and her sister Nina Jane Hayford (Sherman) settled in U.S.A.

McAdam New Brunswick is close to the border of Calais and Vance Bro Maine U.S.A.

Sahara Jane Sherman (Douglas) wife of James Sherman as I can see is not buried with her husband James Sherman, some family members says she is buried but no tombstone, would not the cemetery have record if she were buried there ? and I do not understand why her name would not be on the grave stone as her husbands name is on it as it their daughters name on it.

on James Sherman tombstone it says James Howard Sherman born 1844 died 1908.

I have been stuck here at James Sherman for many years.
This sure is a mystery.

Only other info is Sarah Jane Sherman (Douglas) born abt 1852 ST.James,Charlotte county, her parents are suppose to be Howard Douglas & Mary Ann Dixon.

Thank You all in advance

Have you found James in any censuses before or after marriage?

Added:
He gives parents' nationalities in censuses - do you not agree with them?

There is an 1881 census record which lists James and Sarah and three of their children.  James is a farmer - is that what you have for him?

For country or province of birth all the family have a B - is that a short version of New Brunswick?

At the very top of the page an infant is listed, presumably following on from the previous page.  Then James and family underneath.

I'm somewhat baffled by the column Origins.  Everyone on the page is listed as Scotch - this word by the infant and dittoed all down the column.

Religion is stated as being C Presb - Presbyterian

I'll see what else I can find.

To anyone who has a sub for Ancestry there is a marriage which could be James and Sarah to check out.

James Henry Sherman - York, Ontario

Sarah Jane Douglass - York, Ontario

Both come under the heading of Ontario, Canada, Marriages 1826 - 1937

I did notice when browsing Family Search that some of the baptisms of the children had James Henry Sherman.

So if someone would be kind enough to check this marriage I'm sure Myself1 would be grateful.  ;D

OK thanks for looking Rosie.  It was just that the places matched so I wondered if it was the right couple but evidently not.

As regards the Scotch in 'Origins'

https://celticlife.com/canadas-scottish-roots

' by 1843 there were over 30,000 Scots in New Brunswick. '

Other pages of that census do have other nationalities popping up.

As the Shermans seem to be living next to her parents/mother on 1881 and 1891 censuses, you might think that they ensured that the couple were married?
