New Cemetery Naas
« on: Friday 22 March 19 12:29 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone confirm for me that St. Corban's Cemetery in Naas would have been referred to as the "New Cemetery" in 1923 please?

The cemetery is on maps from 1897 but I cannot fin d a history to confirm exactly when it opened or how it was named

Thanks in advance

Thanks dathai

The computer I am at is acting up - I'll check once I get home

I think I am correct but I have found an article relating to my granduncle's death and burial in this cemetery. Until now I couldn't find his death it wasn't registered. Have a few that fell between family and hospital!

That does indicate that St Corbans was (at least in 1886!) the new cemetery.

My Grand-Aunt married twice and was buried there in the 1960s
It was said with her first husband but he is not mentioned on the headstone only her name and that of her son. In more recent times as newspapers are online I finally found the first husband's death as it doesn't seem to have been registered.  This last article mentioned the cemetery.

The second husband is buried with his first wife in Kildare Town - seemingly this was the done thing so you could be reunited on the last day apparently!

1885 tender for building the wall around the proposed new cemetery in Naas
by 1888 New Cemetery Naas showing on death notices
The most recent I can see is a death notice in 1961.

The earliest St. Corban's Naas I'm getting is 1938 so a bit of an over lap.

Maybe it got the name St.Corban's at some point when it was extended, and the old name of New Cemetery just stuck around through habit.

Edward O'Connor died 1884 and is buried at Mainham however there is a large Celtic cross to his memory in St Corban's
In 1883 he took part in Debates relating to the new cemetery in Naas
http://seamuscullen.net/edward_oconnor.html

Seamus Cullen would be a good man to try and contact as he is very knowledgeble with the history of the area.
He was highly instumental in getting the recent monument to John Devoy erected in Naas.

Thank you dathai and Sinann

I am happy that they are one in the same place although it doesn't answer the inscription on the headstone!
