Seeking information for Charles Henry Hales (Hale), b 1817 Rainham, Kent, England, to Stephen Hales and Mary Ann Hales. Eventually settled in Spanish Fork, Utah, USA, married Julia Ann Lockwood in 1839 in Quincy Adams, Illinois, USA. Specifically looking for information about his time in Nauvoo. It's early here and I'm not trying too hard yet, but when was Charles, senior, in Nauvoo, Illinois? I'm assuming it was after he married in Quincy, IL, and before or while his son was born in Iowa. Where in Iowa was Charles, junior, born? Nauvoo borders on Iowa anyway, as you probably know.

If you have a time period, have you looked for old newspapers? and did either Charles, senior or junior, get a writeup in a county biography/history in their Utah counties? It might not say much about their time in Illinois, but might be interesting anyway.

1840 Census: do you know where Charles and Julia were?

Was Julia Ann Lockwood's family from Nauvoo? Just another thought.
I'll take a better look later.

The easiest way to go about this would be to contact the LDS for a history of their early community in Nauvoo, and see if there is any further mention of Charles, Julia and their family.

If they don't know, there is no way on earth the rest of us are going to find it. :)

Here is what I found on familysearch, you probably have it, but for others reading the thread:

the first hit on familysearch, when looking for Charles Hales in Illinois in 1840 was:

He seems to have been a prominent member of the early LDS.

I Googled "lds community nauvoo illinois 1840's Charles Hales" without the quotes and found:

this document:
http://daviesdawsonhistory.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/6/6/24669691/stephen_hales_112_web_.pdf

refers to:
Charles Henry Hales, “Autobiography of Charles Henry Hales,” undated typescript. Copy held by
Shelley Dawson Davies.

--------
- Find Shelley Dawson Davies, or a copy of the whole autobiography - they must have a copy in Salt Lake City - try the catalog at familysearch.org.

-------
this site quotes from his autobiography:

I would not be surprised if this is the Shelley Dawson Davies you would be looking for:

If you go to familysearch.org, click on the search button and select "books".  Put in "Charles Henry Hales" in the search box and many hits will pop up.  If it says "protected", you can't view it, but if it says "public" you can.  There is a magazine called "The Hales Newsletter".  I found your Charles and Ann Lockwood listed in Vol 3, No. 3, autumn 1997.  There may be other hits that you can find on this site.

*Just noticed that Vol 2, No 3, autumn 1996, has an article written by CHH in Nauvoo in 1845 covering several pages.  Also has articles written by some of his siblings.
