Unfit for further military service?
« on: Tuesday 26 March 19 12:21 GMT (UK) »
Fred Bradbury was born in Leicester on 14 October 1891.  He was the youngest child of my great great grand parents, Samuel Bradbury and Emma née Friswell.

Like many of his friends and relatives, he joined the Leicestershire Regiment in 1914, but he was discharged at Folkestone on 11 March 1915 under Para 392 (iii) cc of the King’s Regulations, which says:

cc) Recruits with more than three months service considered unfit for further military service

I know nothing about Fred at all, but I’d love to know what this discharge actually means. Why might they have decided he was unfit for further military service?

Thanks

There could be many reasons why he was medically unfit. I had a relative released because of trench fever but he never recovered, he went home where he died. He was given a military funeral with all the local dignitaries turning out. Here's some examples that I know about,

e.g
Gassed
Damage to legs/feet so not mobile (trench Foot) (shot)(explosion)
Damage to arms/hands so unable to fire rifle (shot)(explosion)
Illness that debilitates him like rheumatism
Shell shock

Look to see if he has been awarded a pension.

You will need his service record for further information. Unfortunately around 60% were destroyed in WW2.
The Army was a lot more picky in 1914 & men were discharged for all sorts of reasons from flat feet to bad teeth.

His pension record also survived I'll see if it tells us any more.

So, basically, a swollen scrotum.

Thanks for your help.  Another mystery solved.

A cousin of mine was deemed unfit for service but they called him up for 1914-1918, he died as a consequence of war, he has a CWGC memorial, if he was so unfit I cannot understand why he was recalled, I found it very sad and unfair to be honest
