Frederick Youngs WALKERLEY & York House, Exeter
« on: Wednesday 27 March 19 11:03 GMT (UK) »
I have been looking on NLS maps to locate Church Lane, York House and Well Lane, Exeter which appear on a 1881 census for a Frederick Youngs WALKERLEY, his wife and 2 nieces and a nephew.

I was looking in the area of St Michaels church, Heavitree but dont know if this is the correct area and it is at the corners of 4 25,000 maps, so difficult to pinpoint York House!

He lived at York House and was a silk merchant and might also have been a diamond merchant. He was quite wealthy and had property in Brighton and Watford, and took in a neice, Alice and nephew Frederick Joseph,  after their father (his brother) died, leaving the younger sibling Charles with the mother. She then died in Nottingham workhouse and Charles ended up on the North Sea trawlers at 14 living a totally different life. and spent WW1 as a PoW.  Alice believed to have gone to Sorbonne and was later in Russia.
My wife was descended from Charles and has 2 3rd cousins from Frederick taken in by Youngs.  We still dont know the true family story, so trying to find out more about F.Y.  !   We have photos and some of the story.

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
What an interesting family, lots to research there! :)
There is a newspaper report on the death of Alice Hannah (Harris) nee Walkerley aged 74 entitled " A Varied Life"
It confirms a lot of what you know, that her father died when she was 10 and she was an English Governess to the Russian Court aged 21. Apparently  her Mother and youngest brother drowned at sea coming back from America.
She was taken in by her uncle Mr Youngs Walkerley diamond merchant.
The article include details of her later life and a list of mourners.
Hopefully someone else will come up with some more info about Frederick and York House.

Have you read page 1 of the 1881 census for where the house is - specified with his name?

Parish is St Sidwells, municipal ward St David’s.  This is the top left map of the four 1887 ones centred on St Michaels.

Sidwell road runs into Longbrook road, and York road runs between the two of them. There are some unnamed lanes so can’t be sure, but seems to me likely that York House would be there somewhere. Still looking.

Added, and as chempat said, it is mentioned on page 1 of the census.

House before is on Well Lane, and house after is church lane.

This map https://maps.nls.uk/view/101444353. Shows both, Well Lane to the north, Church Lane to the south York street intersects them.  The school is on one corner and a large building on the opposite. I think this must be York house.
I tried to take a snapshot from the map and circle it but I’m having trouble making it small enough to upload.
